Critic review: 'Speed Racer' Condemns Franchise Dignity

It was a horribly mediocre cartoon- and so they've made a movie out of it. Yeah, can't see where *that* might not have worked out.

I agree with hedonis. His statement has simple profound logic to it. To bad movie producers can't grasp that logic to create something artistic instead of maximizing profit.

Loved all 3 matrix movies. Didnt like the first one as much as the rest.

Didnt really like the biblical feel to it all, tho..

Speed Racer? The cartoon is complete shite, so the movie *has* to be better.. but that's not saying much. If I feel like watching cars and fake style I could just go pick up Fast And The Furious from the library.

The first Matrix wasn't even good...I fell asleep in the middle of it, so I've never known what people see in the W bros. anyway.

^ I agree, I didn't like the first Matrix very much at all. Me and my girlfriend at the time were at the drive-in and 30 minutes in we got bored and hopped in the back seat. Once we were done, we left before the movie was over.

Hmm. You're a NIN fan? I'd have thought you would've liked "the look" of Matrix 1, at least.

You should give it another try. Hell, it's on TNT about every 6 days...

The Wachowski's claimed to base the movie on some of Jean Baudrillard's ideas (Simulacra)....I don't know if that's true or not but Morpheos's speeches about power and control never fail to give me a revolutionista stiffy ;)

I've read some Baudrillard...I might have to check it out again. I don't lump myself in with a lot of NIN fans...you know, the ones who have the mentality of a 4 year old + the temper of a violent alcoholic.

Yeah... I don't remember the cartoon being anything special. Seemed pretty much the same crap every episode.

That's why I find it so bizarre that anyone would make a real people movie about it. Except for the fairly catchy theme song it was unremarkable. It had almost the exact same animation as several other cartoons of the era, Giagantor, Kimba and Marine Boy come to mind, so much so that you could hardly tell the different characters apart.
I think the only reason it was made is that the baby boomers that made it remember it fondly from their own early childhoods. Sort of a link to a somehow better, safer time that they do not have anymore.

have you ever seen speed racer...on weeed?

that'll probably be the ONLY way i'd make it through the movie without leaving in the middle of it and going up to the ticket counter to ask for my money back.. :cussing:

..but seriously i'm going to see iron man b4 its out of the theaters and wait until a movie of REAL VALUE shows up this summer..:1orglaugh

Ok.... now you're pushing it. The Matrix was a pretty original movie... something we don't get much of these days with all the comics-to-movies, TVshows-to-movies, and books-to-movies, The Matrix was pretty unique. Add to that the revolutionary effects that were created for that movie and have since been used pretty widely, and you have a milestone movie as far as I'm concerned.

Ok, Reeves isn't likely to win an academy award.
Joel Silver has a pretty up-down track record for movies he'll produce.
Hugo Weeving is pretty awesome.
