We are excited to announce that MyAnimeList will be hosting...

The competition is simple:
  1. Submit your translation for a number of provided pages from one of three featured manga.
  2. Repeat for all manga, if desired.
    Note: You must work alone.
  3. Wait for the winners announcement...
  4. ...Profit???!

The best translator for each manga will win the Individual Work Award—along with an Apple Watch, and possibly the opportunity to translate the entire work as an official translator.

A single Grand Prize Winner from the three individual winners will win a MacBook Air—and an invitation to attend the award ceremony in Tokyo, with a free plane ticket!

All contestants will also earn bragging rights with a participant badge in our upcoming badge system.

The three manga selected for the competition are as follows:

Zutto Dokushin de Iru Tsumori?
Romance, Slice of Life, Josei

by Mari Okazaki

Haru wa Akebono Tsuki mo Nau Sora mo Nao
Slice of Life, Josei

by Machio Same

Jump no Tadashii Tsukurikata!
Shounen

by Takeshi Sakurai

Ready to participate?

The Contest is Now Open!

Deadline is November 4, 2016 PST.

I'd love to take part but my japanese is nowhere near that level, so I'll just tag my friend @paean who may have a better chance than me :'D

Dammit, I really want this.

It's a really nice opportunity. I hope the judges will also provide some sort of commentary on what made the submitted translations good or bad. I think that could make for a very interesting read.

5. Questions regarding the Contestant's translation will not be addressed, including but not limited to requests for constructive criticism and feedback. However, constructive criticism and commentary by the judges regarding specific entries may be published following the awards ceremony.

Going by this, looks like the commentary will be limited though.

I really want in on this for the badges but I can only read like 12 moonrunes so that's a no for me, maybe next year if it's hosted again ;_;.
Good luck, participants!

Also, when will these badges be implemented? I'm a huge achievements freak so I'll be looking forward to this :-).

I'm totally in! Winning a trip sounds great, but even better than that is the opportunity for (possibly) being introduced to a translation agency. I dream about being able to work in the translation industry, and for that reason I just graduated from my Japanese Major and now from september I'm enrolling in a translation postgraduate specialist training course (having chosen Japanese, English and Hungarian as my languages).

Good luck to everyone participating!

Something like "how nice" or more literally: "good, isn't it?" though the "na" appears to be some kind of Particle with no literal Meaning that is used for empathetic Reasons. To be honest, I doubt that he would go far without having adequate English Skills as well. It's not enough to only know Japanese very well - even if it's your Mother Tongue - you also need to provide a well-written Translation for the Language you're doing.

I wouldn't even be good enough if everything were written in Furigana as well, but @Veronin seems like someone who could win the Contest. Good Luck to anyone who is trying! :)

I looked at the manga that the translators have to work on, and gave up once I realized there is no furigana. I am actually a translator myself, and although I understand pretty much all everything in Japanese, I can't read Kanji :9

Good luck to people participating!

I would love to participate, especially considering the fact that there's an award for students, but I think I'd work better as a proofreader than an actual translator; my grammar isn't too bad, but I can't read a lick of kanji or katakana. Sorry, but it looks like I'll have to pass. However, I do wish all of the MAL users who are participating good luck.

"entries by professional translators will be disqualified"
scanlators are not professional...technically. so they'd be eligible, right..?
anyways, good luck for those trying to partake in this. i expect that you'll need to be fluent not only in kanji (which, let's be honest here, you can cheat using a dictionary), but also know your keigo (beyond what's taught in your genki book).
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

Soon™. We're currently trying to come up with some nice badge designs, and I'd rather have something nice than rush the process.

Professional means employed as a translator. Scanlators aren't professional so long as a company isn't paying them for their work.

Professionals already have their translation skills recognised by the industry, so they don't need to participate. It's like Taylor Swift auditioning for American Idol.
